Pritzker signs bills addressing gun storage, tracing of firearms

Gun owners in Illinois will soon be required to securely store their firearms and report lost or stolen weapons following the signing of two new laws by Governor JB Pritzker. The Safe Gun Storage Act mandates that firearms must be kept in locked containers to prevent access by children or prohibited individuals. Violations may result in fines ranging from $500 to $10,000 depending on the circumstances.

In a related measure, law enforcement must now trace the ownership of firearms recovered from crime scenes, helping to address the high rate of unresolved shootings. These measures come as courts increasingly scrutinize gun control laws amid ongoing debates over Second Amendment rights. Both laws aim to enhance public safety and reduce gun-related incidents, particularly among children.
