We spoke with Thingiverse about its new AI-driven ghost gun detection that eliminates designs for 3D printing – companies turn to AI to block production of ghost guns

In response to the increasing concern about 3D printed “ghost guns,” which are untraceable firearms made using 3D printers, Thingiverse has implemented new AI-driven measures to prohibit such designs. The Manhattan District Attorney has also taken action, urging Creality, a 3D printer manufacturer, to adopt similar AI technologies. Thingiverse VP Rob Veldkamp emphasized their commitment to safety while allowing non-lethal replicas. Flagged designs will undergo human review to verify whether they are harmful. The initiative reflects a growing trend among companies to use AI for preventing the production of illegal firearms and to ensure compliance with regulations.
