Rocky Mount hopes community events help mitigate gun violence
In Rocky Mount, North Carolina, community events like the “Summer Night Lights Series” aim to address the rising gun violence in the area. These events, featuring food, games, and music at Buck Leonard Park, provide a safe gathering space for residents amidst recent violent incidents, including shootings that have claimed lives.
Local leaders, such as Pastor James Gilliard, emphasize the far-reaching impact of gun violence, suggesting it affects generations beyond the immediate victims. In response to this challenge, Rocky Mount has received a $300,000 grant from the Governor’s Crime Commission, and several crime-prevention events are scheduled, including a meeting by North Carolinians Against Gun Violence and National Night Out organized by the Rocky Mount Police Department.
