Federal appeals court rules California ammunition background checks unconstitutional

A federal appeals court ruled that California’s requirement for gun owners to undergo background checks for ammunition purchases is unconstitutional. In a 2-1 decision, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a previous injunction, stating the law infringes on the Second Amendment right to bear arms. Circuit Judge Sandra Ikuta noted that the law “meaningfully constrains” this right and the state had failed to demonstrate its alignment with historical firearm regulations.

California Governor Gavin Newsom referred to the ruling as a “slap in the face” to efforts aimed at reducing gun violence in the state, while officials are considering further legal options. The decision highlights ongoing tensions between gun control laws and Second Amendment rights.
