Oakland leaders host Ceasefire teach-ins to show how violence prevention is working

Oakland’s city officials and police are collaborating to share the success of their violence prevention efforts. Holly Joshi, head of the Violence Prevention program, reported significant achievements since the Ceasefire strategy was reintroduced, including a 30% reduction in homicides and a 50% decrease in shootings over 18 months. This initiative, integral to Mayor Barbara Lee’s public safety agenda, targets less than one percent of people in Oakland who contribute to violence. With outreach and support services like job training and educational programs, officials believe Ceasefire is the most effective gun violence prevention strategy in the U.S. Community engagement events, or teach-ins, aim to inform residents about these efforts. Two more sessions are planned for later in July.
