Kensington’s Peace Park opens with new Mural Arts sculpture

Kensington’s Peace Park opened on Sunday, aiming to unite the community against gun violence through art. The park’s highlight is the Gun Violence Memorial Sculpture, made from disassembled firearms collected during gun buyback events in 2024. Collaborators Shane Claiborne and Jacob Christopher Hammes emphasized the challenges of using firearms as a focal point, aiming to shift public perception of these objects tied to gun violence.

The sculpture serves as a communal firepit, symbolizing healing through engagement, especially for teenagers from the area, who learned welding skills for the project. To mark the tragedy of gun violence, the sculpture lights up every 11 minutes—reflecting the frequency of gun-related deaths in the U.S. The park’s opening celebration included festivities for children, showcasing a community commitment to combating gun violence.
