Ghost gun proliferation spurs crackdown at Thingiverse, the world’s largest 3D printer model file repository — lawmakers also ask 3D printer vendors to create AI-based systems to detect and block gun prints

Thingiverse is implementing a crackdown on gun-related 3D printer models using new automated technology. This initiative follows an NYPD investigation that uncovered hundreds of weapon-related files available for download, highlighting the platform’s struggles to regulate content as it grew rapidly. While the Manhattan District Attorney’s office does not expect to completely eliminate ghost guns, they aim to complicate the process of accessing such files.

Additionally, DA Alvin Bragg has reached out to 3D printer manufacturers like Bambu Lab, urging them to develop AI-driven systems that can automatically detect and block gun-related designs from being printed.
