US attorney general paves way for more convicted criminals to own guns
United States Attorney General Pam Bondi has initiated a process to simplify the restoration of gun ownership rights for individuals with criminal convictions. This proposal aligns with President Donald Trump’s administration’s commitment to fulfilling campaign promises to gun rights advocates, who view current restrictions as unconstitutional.
While the administration claims this change will allow eligible citizens to reclaim their rights, gun control advocates are worried about the potential public safety implications. Under the new plan, Bondi would oversee the exemption process, previously managed by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Certain categories of individuals, including violent felons and sex offenders, would still be ineligible for gun rights restoration. The proposed rule will be available for public comment before its official adoption.
