3D Printing Patterns Might Make Ghost Guns More Traceable Than We Thought

Early studies indicate that 3D printers may produce consistent toolmarks on repeated prints, raising the possibility of tracing 3D-printed ghost guns back to the specific printer that manufactured them. Forensic expert Kirk Garrison has seen early success in linking printed objects to their printers, although he cautions that this research is still in the early stages and might take years to develop reliable methods for tracing.

Collaborating with researchers from the University of Oklahoma, Garrison’s findings suggest that unique toolmarks could be left behind in the printing process. Their research focuses on differentiating objects based on various components of the printing process, including the print beds and nozzles used, although preliminary results show limitations in accuracy and applicability in court.
