Texas Cracks Down on Road Rage Shootings

A Texas law set to take effect this year will increase penalties for road rage shootings, responding to alarming rates of highway violence. A 2024 analysis by The Trace revealed that Texas led the U.S. in road rage incidents involving firearms, with 741 recorded from 2014 to 2023, resulting in 146 fatalities and over 430 injuries.

The law, which garnered bipartisan support, will impose sentences of five years to life for shooting into or toward an occupied vehicle. Advocates, including families of victims, underscored the urgency of the issue, highlighting that the incidents are often provoked by minor disputes. Despite the crackdown, some lawmakers call for additional measures, such as requiring the archiving of highway camera footage to aid investigations.
