C-U leaders discuss solutions to gun violence
CHAMPAIGN — Community members and leaders gathered at Champaign’s Garden Hills Elementary School to develop strategies to combat gun violence in Champaign-Urbana. The meeting was organized by the Community Safety and Justice Division from the city’s Equity and Engagement Department, and included a range of participants from city council members to parents. The groups emphasized the importance of open communication among youth and adults, family support, collaboration between community organizations and governmental units, and using data-driven approaches to inform their actions.
Champaign police Deputy Chief Greg Manzana stressed the need for proactive measures to aid the community’s most vulnerable populations. Both Urbana leaders and Champaign police emphasized the critical role of youth engagement in the dialogue surrounding gun violence prevention. Discussions included potential new legislation addressing behaviors connected to gun violence, such as wearing ski masks in hot weather.
