Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court aiming to curb gun violence
Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court’s Violence Intervention Program, led by Judge Brendan Sheehan, focuses on reducing gun violence by assisting those arrested with weapons who have not committed crimes with those weapons. Inspired by his father’s murder, Judge Sheehan emphasizes the importance of intervening before individuals use firearms. The program connects participants with mentors and resources, including educational help and job placement, fostering positive life changes. Successful graduates can have felony gun convictions expunged, giving them a clean slate. After receiving a $2 million federal grant, the program has expanded to the juvenile court system, aiming to alter the mindset of younger individuals and reduce gun violence in the community.
