Trump administration targets ATF, with plans to cut jobs and ease gun restrictions

The Trump administration is moving to restructure the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) by loosening gun regulations and significantly reducing its budget. Efforts led by the Department of Government Efficiency aim to cut around 50 regulations, such as extending the validity period for firearm purchase background checks from 30 to 60 days, and allowing gun dealers to dispose of records after 20 years. Critics warn that these changes undermine the ATF’s critical oversight role in regulating the gun industry. The proposed budget cut of 25% would eliminate over 500 investigators, hindering the ATF’s ability to enforce laws and trace crime guns, a crucial tool for law enforcement in solving violent crimes.
