Opinion | How DOGE could amplify America’s gun violence problem
President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is targeting the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) with plans to revise or eliminate numerous gun regulations. Reports indicate that DOGE aims to alter as many as 47 regulations, potentially reducing responsible controls on firearms.
In particular, a focus on streamlining paperwork may shorten the gun buyer’s form from seven pages to three, which risks omitting critical questions that assess a buyer’s eligibility to own a firearm. Meanwhile, the DOJ plans to cut ATF inspectors, who ensure compliance with essential regulations meant to limit access to firearms for criminals and those with severe mental illness.
These actions point to a concerning trend toward looser gun laws in an already heavily armed America.
