Gun rights groups slams Senate parliamentarian’s ruling on silencer deregulation

Gun rights organizations expressed outrage after the Senate parliamentarian ruled that a proposal to deregulate firearm silencers could not be included in President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Republican lawmakers aimed to eliminate a $200 federal excise tax on silencers and remove them from the National Firearms Act’s registration requirements. However, parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough stated the measure did not comply with the Byrd Rule, which prohibits including “extraneous” measures in budget reconciliation bills. Dudley Brown, president of the National Association for Gun Rights, called the ruling “total garbage” and urged senators to disregard it. The NRA also opposed the ruling, stating their commitment to eliminate the tax burden on these items remains strong.
