Peoria nonprofit Art Inc. expands program offerings into gun violence prevention

The Peoria nonprofit Artists ReEnvisioning Tomorrow Inc., or Art Inc., is extending its programs to include gun violence prevention and workforce development. Co-founder Jonathon Romain initially hesitated to pursue a grant from the Illinois Department of Human Services’ Office of Firearm Violence Prevention, but recognizing the connection to their existing youth empowerment programs and the trauma faced by many youth they work with, they decided to move forward.

Their new S.O.L.V.E. program employs a “credible messenger” model, utilizing five trained staff members to intervene and de-escalate potential gun violence situations in their community. Additionally, the program aims to provide mentorship and connect high-risk individuals with mental health and job placement resources. Art Inc. also recently received a grant to support their employment training program for young adults aged 16 to 24, helping them navigate through life’s challenges.
