Senate Moves to Delist Silencers, Short-Barrel Shotguns and Rifles from NFA in Budget Bill
The first draft of the Senate Finance Committee’s budget reconciliation bill aims to partially repeal the National Firearms Act (NFA) of 1934. It proposes to remove silencers, short-barrel rifles, and shotguns from the NFA, eliminating the $200 tax and registration with the ATF. A similar provision was included in the House’s budget bill. Democrats plan to challenge the repeal under the Byrd Rule, which mandates reconciliation provisions must primarily affect the budget. The bill’s broader scope is intended to engage gun-rights advocates but may face political obstacles. Only machine guns and destructive devices would remain regulated if the bill passes, but buyers would still need background checks under the Gun Control Act of 1968.
