Gun Sales Continue Decline in May

The number of FBI background checks associated with gun sales decreased by 1.6 percent year-over-year in May, marking the worst performing May for the gun industry since 2019, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). Checks fell from 1.089 million in May 2024 to 1.071 million in May 2025, continuing a downward trend observed throughout 2025. Following Donald Trump’s election, concerns over new gun restrictions dwindled, leading to reduced demand. Economic factors, such as tariffs increasing prices, have further influenced consumer sentiment. Although gun stocks showed mixed results, an upcoming bill, “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” aimed at reducing taxes on silencers may lift sales if passed. Despite May’s decline, the NSSF asserts that demand for firearms remains strong, with over 1 million background checks each month reflecting the importance of gun ownership rights to many Americans.
