I’m an exchange student. The US is not as violent as the world thinks.

As an exchange student from Senegal, I have observed a significant decline in the global perception of the U.S., particularly regarding violence. While crime statistics indicate a decrease in violent crime, media coverage often skews the narrative, leading to a misunderstanding of the true situation. The American dream, once a symbol of hope for many Africans, seems to be fading as the country is viewed as increasingly violent.

Despite the negative perceptions, the actual crime rate is declining due to effective prevention efforts. Issues like healthcare and gun violence contribute to the U.S.’s problematic image abroad, yet the education system offers unique opportunities for student growth and talent development. While the violence exists, it is not as pervasive as widely believed. Experiencing America firsthand reveals a country with both flaws and opportunities worth exploring.
