Justice Department deal ends a ban on an aftermarket trigger. Gun control advocates are alarmed

The Trump administration has lifted a long-standing ban on the sale of forced-reset triggers, which enable semiautomatic rifles to fire more rapidly. This decision, part of a settlement announced by the Justice Department, resolves several legal disputes, allowing the return of previously seized devices. Gun control advocates have expressed concerns that this will lead to increased gun violence, with critics labeling the settlement as effectively legalizing machine guns.

The deal, reached with Rare Breed Triggers, overturns the government’s previous stance that these triggers were illegal machine gun conversion devices. As part of the agreement, the company will refrain from developing such devices for use on handguns, and the ATF is required to return confiscated triggers.
