Bipartisan Bill Expanding Gun Carry for Cops Passes House

Current and former police officers may soon have expanded rights to carry firearms following the House of Representatives’ passage of HR 2243. The bill reforming the Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act (LEOSA) passed by a vote of 229 to 193, with 14 Democrats joining 215 Republicans in support. It allows qualified officers to carry firearms in more public areas, including school zones and federal facilities, as long as they meet training requirements.

Supporters argue it will enhance public safety and allow retired officers to continue serving their communities. However, some gun-rights activists view this bill as granting special privileges to law enforcement while disregarding civilian rights. The Senate version is under consideration but faces challenges in garnering bipartisan backing.
