Oakland violence prevention programs set to receive $13M in extended grants

Oakland’s Department of Violence Prevention is poised to extend $12.8 million in one-year grants to community- and school-based programs aimed at reducing violence, supporting hospital visits, crisis lines, and mental health assistance. The City Council’s Public Safety Committee unanimously approved the grants, which will fund organizations addressing gang violence, gender-based violence, and commercial sexual exploitation. The temporary funding is necessary while the city awaits Measure NN funds, which won’t be available until October 2026. Despite recent success with a 32% decline in homicides last year, Oakland is contending with budget restrictions and recent federal funding cuts, pushing the DVP to focus more on immediate violence intervention.
