Philly-based organization republishes Surgeon General’s gun violence advisory after Trump admin removes it
In June 2024, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy issued a significant advisory declaring gun violence in America a public health crisis. After the advisory and related resources vanished from federal websites with the Trump administration, the Philadelphia Center for Gun Violence Reporting took the initiative to republish it on their platform. Murthy highlighted the urgent threat of firearm violence to national health. Jim MacMillan, the center’s director, emphasized the need for such comprehensive resources to aid in prevention efforts, noting gun violence has been the leading cause of death for children in the U.S. since 2020. In light of recent government cuts affecting gun violence research, he believes keeping the advisory accessible honors the essential work of public health researchers.
