DOJ grant cuts leaves DC anti-gun violence group scrambling for funding sources

As community organizations in the DMV strive to prevent gun violence, they are facing challenges after the Department of Justice (DOJ) canceled hundreds of millions of dollars in grant awards. These grants historically supported various programs, including addiction services and crime victim advocacy. According to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, these cuts are aimed at eliminating “wasteful spending.” Affected group Guns Down Friday, founded by Jawanna Hardy, is anticipated to lose around $75,000, jeopardizing programs like Stop the Bleed, which teaches communities about tourniquet use. Despite the cuts, Hardy expresses determination to seek private donors and sustain community efforts. “We will create change ourselves,” she asserts.
