California bill would ban one of nation’s most popular handguns

California lawmakers have introduced Assembly Bill 1127, aiming to ban semiautomatic pistols, particularly certain Glocks, which can be easily converted into machine guns with illegal attachments. This bill was introduced by Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel in response to a mass shooting in Sacramento that resulted in six fatalities and 12 injuries, where over 100 rounds were fired from Glocks using switch technology.

The proposed legislation would prevent licensed firearms sellers from providing semiautomatic pistols that can be converted into machine guns. While federal law bans owning a machine gun without ATF approval, California already prohibits fully-automatic firearms. The bill has significant support from gun control groups but faces opposition from gun rights advocates, who argue it threatens the legal sale of popular firearms.
