New art exhibit at Detroit museum honors victims of gun violence

The Gun Violence Memorial Project, created by conceptual artist Hank Willis Thomas, opens at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) and runs through August 10. The memorial features four glass brick houses, each containing 700 bricks, symbolizing the weekly toll of gun violence in the U.S. Since its inception in 2019, the number has risen to 820. Community members have contributed personal items, such as military dog tags and baby shoes, in memory of those lost to gun violence, along with their names and photos. Artistic director Jova Lynne expressed hope that the memorial could become a permanent monument for healing and change. The museum will collect additional items on June 21 for those wishing to honor their loved ones impacted by gun violence.
