Students present gun policy solutions in innovative course
Undergraduate students at William & Mary presented their research during a “Gun Policy Summit,” proposing solutions to gun violence. Assistant Teaching Professor Alan Kennedy’s seminar focused on generating practical research, with students exploring various topics.
The four groups examined: the connection between firearm access and suicide rates, the partisan framing of gun violence in media, the effects of federal background checks on domestic violence homicide rates, and law enforcement tactics in school shootings.
Findings indicated lower suicide rates in states with stricter firearm laws, showed how media bias affects the narrative on mass shootings, noted a slight decrease in intimate partner homicides post-Brady Act, and highlighted the effectiveness of direct engagement by law enforcement during school shootings.
Kennedy aims to continue this innovative course to develop actionable public policy solutions.
