Republican Senator Said He Was Joking When He Suggested Gun Violence Between Journalists and Lawmakers

Republican Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin suggested that journalists would write “less false stories” if disputes were settled by gun violence. He referenced the 1890 murder of Rep. William Taulbee by journalist Charles Kincaid in his social media video, which he later claimed was meant as a joke. Mullin stated, “There’s a lot we can say about reporters of the stories they write…if we could still handle our differences that way.” His remarks come amidst growing verbal attacks on journalists, including over 100 instances during Donald Trump’s campaign speeches attacking the media. The International Center for Journalists found a significant portion of Americans witnessing threats or harassment against journalists online. Mullin later clarified his comments, mentioning he also joked about bringing back caning for political disputes.
