Leader of Los Choneros transnational criminal organization indicted in Brooklyn federal court on international drug and gun charges

A seven-count indictment has been unsealed in Brooklyn federal court, charging José Adolfo Macías Villamar, or “Fito,” with conspiracy and firearm violations related to international cocaine distribution. As the leader of Los Choneros, a violent drug trafficking organization in Ecuador since at least 2020, he is implicated in smuggling cocaine into the U.S. and illicit firearms trafficking. The organization, in alliance with Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel, has reportedly harmed both Ecuador and the U.S. through drug shipments. Macías Villamar remains at large and unapprehended as law enforcement efforts, including partnerships with international entities, continue in this case. If convicted, he faces a potential life sentence.
